So just what and where is Ground Zero? When did this all take place? What's the history here? Well here's your answer.
There are always rumors and suspicion of underground scientific workings. Workings that deal in the mutation of animal, plant and even human genetics. But these are all just rumors, myths or stories made up by those who others believe to be paranoid... but are they all that paranoid?
Clarensford, New York was a bustling city full of science and education. What Toronto, Ontario did for art, Clarensford did for science. Hospitals had the best equipment, science labs had benches and machines that rivaled Japan's, textbooks were updated frequently. This, naturally, raised a level of suspicion and envy. All these scientists, doctors, engineers were all packed into one large super city. Not only was this not 'fair' this was scary. Should the wrong person take interest in the wrong branch... the results could be catastrophic... and they were.
November the 5th, 2012, it was recruitment day. Young University graduates were selected and invited to work at different labs, shops, etc. The same went for Zeneko Unlimited, an underground lab that dealt with the altering of genetics, be it human, animal or plant. A young student was recruited. Young and eager to please the graduate worked hard and was very hands on. But unfortunately in his eagerness to prove himself, he killed them all. He had been carrying a vile of dangerous chemicals to another work bench - rather hurriedly as he believed he had found something interesting. A small bump against the workable was all it took. The miniature collision caused the chain of events that would destroy an entire city. The graduate had been in a hurry, the bump was really more of a jar, and when a person is jarred they flail, usually attempting to regain some form of balance. The same can be said for the graduate. He bumped against the table and flung out his arm - the one with the hand that was holding the vial - thus sending the vial flying - right into a vat of unknown chemicals and creating Day Zero. The explosion was immediate and resounding. The fireball created by the chemicals obliterated the lab and the ground above, below and beside it. Had you have been on the surface the explosion would have looked like a gas line blowing up.
The explosion propelled chemicals mixed with mutated genetics into the air, water and soil, within a 5 mile radius of the city limits, thus contaminating the area... and things began to change. Ordinary people turned into things, plants began to morph into these flesh-eating monsters and animals began to go berserk. Disease and famine ensued, thus damaging the once strong population of Clarensford (now known as Ground Zero), a city whose population rivaled that of New Yorks.
The news called it a freak explosion - some gas line that wasn't maintained well enough - until the mutations began. People began to grow extra limbs, eyes and organs; others dropped dead only to walk again. Animals once so peaceful became blood thirsty, others became highly intelligent. Inanimate plants grew teeth and a hunger for flesh. Everything that was once safe was now dangerous.
There were, of course, some who were completely unaffected by the blast. People from neighboring countries have slowly started to notice human, animal and plant mutations, those that are farther away remain unaware and untouched for now. There are humans, animals and plants whose genetics remain unaffected by the chemicals. Just why this is, no one knows.
Now the dead and monsters run rampant and the ones left unaffected by the blast must work together with their mutated partner species in order to survive... but the question is... can they?
